Auctioning Horizontally Differentiated Items

This paper analyzes competition between two sellers that offer horizontally differentiated items at competing auctions. Three possible outcomes can arise in equilibrium. For substantially differentiated items the monopoly reserve prices form an equilibrium, and the market is not entirely covered. When products become closer substitutes, a non-empty interval of types becomes valuable to both sellers. When transport costs are low, and virtual valuations are high, sellers compete for these bidders and set their reserve prices below the valuation of the marginal bidder. In equilibrium all types enjoy participation rents. For intermediate levels of transport costs it is not worth competing for runaway bidders. In this case, there is a continuum of equilibria. In each equilibrium sellers adjust their reserve prices so that the marginal bidder gets no rents.

采用外贸总额、实际利用外资额、人均外贸总额、人均实际利用外资额、外贸依存度和资本依存度等6个外向型经济测度指标,对黑龙江省13个地市外向型经济发展水平进行综合测度和分类比较研究,结论表明黑龙江省外向型经济发展地域分异十分明显,这种地域分异是客观因素和主观因素共同作用的结果,其中,客观因素主要包括区位因素、经济因素、空间联系因素和社会文化因素;主观因素主要是指决策行为因素,包括政府决策行为和企业决策行为。     

贫富分化现象的经济法分析

贫富分化一直以来就是人类社会发展过程中一个无法逃避的顽疾。面对贫困,以自由主义经济理论为基础的近代法律体系,仅靠诸如民商和行政这样的法律部门是无法从根本上解决这一问题的。因此,需要确定一种新兴的法律部门以保障国家对贫富分化等经济问题进行干预的权力作为自己的使命,这就是以授权和控制政府干预经济行为并重为特性的经济法。     

河北省农民分化状况与对策

在我国现代化进程中，主要从事农林渔牧业的农村劳动者大量转移到非农产业领域，表现为农民身份及其社会、政治、经济地位的变化。农民阶层的不断分化，使得农民由一个均质、单一的社会群体分化成有不同地位、不同利益特点与需求的社会群体。文章通过深入农村进行社会调查，从农民职业分化、政治分化、不同地理环境下农民分化、不同产业状况下的农民分化四个方面实证分析了河北省农民分化状况，并在此基础上提出了相关政策建议。     

Regulation without Reason: The Deleterious Effects of Government Regulation on Private Pension Provision

In this article, the history of regulation in pensions in the United Kingdom is analysed, in particular with respect to defined benefit occupational pension schemes. A framework of criteria for effective legislation is developed. The original prudent person rule provided a good framework for legislation, but most subsequent regulation that has been enacted does not meet our criteria. Recently regulation has increased the cost and risk of individual schemes and the systemic risk in the system as a whole. The article finds that, in totality, regulation has been disastrous for these schemes, contributing to their demise. The article concludes by briefly outlining how effective regulation might have developed to produce a flexible and resilient system.     

A Dynamic Model of Advertising and Product Differentiation

This paper analyses a differential game of duopolisticrivalry through time where firms can use advertisingand price as competitive tools. Two cases are consideredwhereby: (1) advertising has the main effect ofincreasing market size and firms differ in productionefficiency; (2) advertising has both predatory and cooperativeeffects in a symmetric market. The former shows thatmarket shares and advertising shares are positivelycorrelated and that market size increases with thedifference in firms' relative efficiency. The latterhighlights the differences in the feedback andopen-loop strategies. It is shown that firms' advertisingare strategic complements and that profits are higherin the feedback equilibrium because firms advertise more.The applicability of the model in markets wherefranchise contracts and dealership agreements operateis also discussed.     

Rent Control and Prices of Owner-occupied Housing

We examine the relation between rent control and prices of owner-occupied housing in the presence of different qualities of housing. While a rent ceiling and the price of condominiums are substitutes if housing is undifferentiated, it is shown that this is not necessarily the case when housing differs in quality. A complete dismantling of rent control may in fact increasethe price of condominiums.

Organizations in changing environments need to become flexible, responsive and participative. We develop an understanding of governance in these organizations by drawing analogies between organization theory and theories of non-linear dynamics. We identify freedom and creativity as driving principles in 'chaotic' participative organizations, and explore the ethics of their exercise within organizational communities of practice, communities of discernment and communities of commitment.
